ACE Inhibitor Birth Defects and Lawsuits

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Todd Going ACE Inhibitors are drugs that are used to deal with high blood pressure problems. Although theyve been on the market for several years, there have been serious problems detected in patients who have taken these drugs. Some of the side effects are relatively mild, while others are very severe. Common side effects of ACE Inhibitors include coughing, dizziness and the loss of sense of taste. More severe side effects deal with the use of ACE Inhibitors in pregnant women. Studies have shown that women in their second or third trimester of pregnancy should not take these drugs due to a risk of serious birth defects. These types of defects generally cause irreversible damage to the heart and brain of the child, while some others may die. If you or a loved one has already given birth to a child who has suffered from birth defects as a result of you taking ACE Inhibitors while you were pregnant, there are many legal and medical options available to you. You need to see a doctor to discuss a course of treatment for a child, and then consult with an experienced ACE Inhibitor attorney immediately. There are professional attorneys in your area that are qualified to help those who have been irreversibly harmed by the effects of taking ACE Inhibitors while pregnant. Simple Ways to Make Your Marriage Happy

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Abe Kass When a husband and wife give gifts to one another in a spirit of friendship it creates between them feelings of comradery, affection and closeness. Giving includes a full range of behaviours from giving a material gift to giving the gift of kindness and everything in-between. Cheerful giving attracts, and selfishness repels. This is a simple formula, but it=s implementation is not always so easy. Successful giving requires that you know how your spouse thinks and knowing this sometimes requires effort. A husband brings his wife a thoughtful birthday gift. After opening the box she begins to cry. The startled husband says to his wife, “I thought you wanted a new toaster!” She replies, “yes, but not for my birthday!” She bought him a beautiful designer tie because she loves clothes. He doesnt like clothing. For him, dressing is just a chore, especially formal attire. She was hurt that he didnt appreciate her gift. He bought her an exercise bike because he knows being overweight is unhealthy and that her weight bothers her. She is insulted that he is calling attention to her weight and she may even conclude that he is bothered by her appearance and is being critical of her. She always makes it a point to ask him detailed questions about his day at work. She very much appreciates it when he asks her. However, he gets irritated when she asks. He just wants to forget about work when he comes home, and feels by asking, she is being insensitive. The lesson to be learned from all this is- Successful giving is measured not by the giver, but by the receiver. It is the receiver that has to be happy about the gift, not the giver. People have what I call “love buttons .” These are particular acts that make a person feel good. Everyone has different triggers. Triggers could be visual, auditory, or kinesthetic, etc. If you want to be a successful giver, make sure you push one or more of your partner’s “love buttons.” Pushing a ” love button ” makes your partner feel appreciated, understood and cared for. One person may feel appreciated, understood, and cared for if they are taken to a pleasant place like a park (visual trigger), another person receiving a tangible gift (kinesthetic trigger), another person smelling the aroma of exotic perfume (olfactory trigger) and another person giving them the gift of carefully listening to them talk and speaking kindly (auditory trigger). It is important to learn what your partner really wants, that is, what are their “love buttons .” Some couples find themselves in a cycle of negative behaviour. They are both angry, blaming and resentful towards the other. These hostile feelings can, unfortunately, become chronic, lasting many years. This then becomes the “big test” of giving because the person doesnt have a natural feeling to do so. No other person has as great an opportunity and responsibility to perform selfless cheerful giving with your spouse as you do. How one treats their spouse not only may make the difference as to whether the relationship succeeds or fails, but also underlines the basic success or failure of one’s personal life. In these times there are many destructive forces that are alienating people from each other and breaking-up families. Now, we have to work harder and smarter. The most potent immunization medicine for safeguarding a healthy and satisfying relationship is selfless cheerful giving. The more a husband and wife live by this value the healthier and more satisfying their relationship will be. If there are children in the home, they too will also directly benefit by the peace and harmony that will be found in the home. Sit with your partner. Take a pen and paper and write at the top, “I feel appreciated and cared for when you . . . ” List those actions your partner can take that make you feel appreciated and cared for and then exchange the lists. Try to do at least one item each day as a gift to your partner. Abe Kass, M.A., R.S.W., R.M.F.T., is the publisher of Wisdom Scientific self-help educational programs. By Jennifer Houck We Moms love to keep our kids busy doing different activities so we will not hear “I am bored Mom.” “What can I do?” What better way to keep them busy than with Free Games and Free Crafts. Moms are always on a budget, so this makes mommy happy and kids happy. Outdoor games are also a real treat in a child’s eyes. Do you remember the yesteryears when we were always outside playing outdoor games such as Red Rover, Dodge Ball, Bean Bag Toss, Tater Sack Race. Unforgiveness Can Kill A Relationship

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Ted Segura Have you heard of couples who do not talk to each other for days or weeks because one partner had not forgiven the other for something that the other did? They have become board-mates who live in the same house or apartment but do not speak to each other. Their actions toward each other are mechanical and lifeless. Unless the person who is offended forgives the other, the relationship is doomed to die! Unforgiveness affects attitude. It is the result of pride. You offended me and hurt me and therefore, I will not forgive you. This kind of attitude is destructive. Unforgiveness past relationships is like drinking poison and expecting the other to die. You are the one affected and so will your children or family or spouse be adversely affected. Being human, we are prone to commit mistakes. We may say or do things that offend our partner. And most of the things we say and do that offend or hurt our partner are unintentional. Who wants to destabilize a relationship on purpose? No one in his or her right mind would do that. Unfortunately, these things happen. And they happen all too often. And misunderstanding arises. Tempers flair up. A huge fight looms. And then silence. Silence that goes on for hours, days and even weeks leads to unforgiveness past relationships. The Holy Book states an episode in the gospels where Jesus was asked by one of his disciples. Lord, how many times should we forgive? Seven times? Jesus answered by saying Not seven times, but seventy times seven times. The message is clear, if we count the number of times we forgive a person, seventy times seven is equivalent to four hundred and ninety times! Who would want to count and keep track of the number of times he has forgiven the other, up to almost five hundred times? We might as well stop counting. One should not unleash unforgiveness. Again, this all boils down to attitude. Take an inventory of your attitude. Although attitude sounds like an overused word, its much, much more important than just being positive. You need to be hopeful in your relationship; you need to have a feeling that somewhere, there is a solution to forgiveness. And I can find it. I can find that solution to patch up a broken relationship. Some things just cannot change. People will continue to make mistakes. You just have to say to yourself, it is what it is. You just cannot change that. You may have heard of the story of a father who had not seen his son, whose name was Paco, for many years because of something that the son did to the father who could not forgive him. The father realized after all those years that his unforgiving spirit had done nothing but cause sleepless nights and misery. He decided to place an ad on the local newspaper reading Paco, my son. I forgive you and if you find it in your heart to forgive me, meet me at the fountain in the town square at noon on Saturday signed your father. On Saturday noontime, 800 men named Paco turned up at the fountain, hoping that it was their father who placed the ad forgiving them. Have a forgiving spirit, mend relationships and enjoy life, for life is short. Ted and Christine Segura have been involved in the topic of relationships for several years. They are seriously involved in an organization that helps couples and families in the areas of family life and enhancing relations. Tips For Keeping Your Nails Beautiful and Healthy

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Sarah Freeland Nails are more than shiny body parts that you bite or polish. They are actually used for a lot of things including peeling fruit, opening food items, scratching, attracting attention and for stimulating the skin. The look of your nails also gives people a visual cue about your health and your personality. If you want to make the best impression possibly you need to take care of your nails to ensure that they stay healthy and beauty. There are several things that you can do to keep your nails healthy. The first thing is to keep your nails hydrated. You can do this by rubbing your nails and cuticles with a dab of petroleum jelly or cuticle oil. The second thing that you can do to keep your nails healthy is to wear rubber or latex gloves when you use cleaning chemicals and soaps. This will protect your hands and nails from the damaging properties of these chemicals. Next you can make sure that you dry your hands thoroughly after you do the dishes or take a bath or shower. This will prevent bacterial or fungal growth around your nails. Trimming your nails is an important step for keeping them healthy. If you want to avoid ingrown toenails cut your toenails straight across instead of following the shape of your toes. When you are working on your fingernails make sure that you dont trim your nails too short. Also dont cut your cuticles. Instead push them back using a cuticle tool slanted at a 45 degree angle. Use polish to protect your nails from breaking and chipping. If you dont like color on your nails you can always use a clear polish. Looking to find an Aveda salon in Salt Lake? There’s Nothing ‘New Age’ About Receiving Answers from God

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Barbara Rose, Ph.D. Here are the 3 most common questions I am asked about this topic: How do I know Im not making it all up? How do I know God really hears me? Why would God want to answer me? Now, I am going to give you the answers. How do I know Im not making it all up? The only way you will know that you are not making it all up is with actual practice, and to see over a period of time that there is no way on this planet that you could receive the information about which you previously knew nothing about, and yet, it is all completely accurate. It takes practice, that is all. How do I know God really hears me? God is inside of you. Not up in haven on a throne with a feather pen, writing down your deeds to sentence you to a life in (non-existent) hell. You have something called a soul. You have intuitive feelings and perceptions. You have gut instincts. THIS is how God communicates with you. All you need to do is listen, and follow that still small voice all the time, because if youve ever had a gut feeling, you know that whenever you followed it, you never went wrong. Whenever you went against it, there was regret. So its not so much God hearing you, as it is are you hearing God? Do you trust the information you receive that is available to you every moment of your life? Now, you really can take it a major step further, and take out a pen and pad, and write down your questions from your heart, where you genuinely want a real answer to anything that may be troubling you. It could be a personal or business decision. It could be about another person you are thinking of getting closer to. It could be about anything that really matters to you. Just ask the question, take some deep breaths, and ask from divine truth to come into your mind, and then write it all down as it flows into your mind. That is all there is to it. With a lot of practice, the ego will get out of the way, and you will begin to soar with ALL of you senses, as opposed to limiting yourself to just five. You will know God hears you, after you see the many answers you receive that really make a significant and positive difference in your life time after time. Why would God want to answer me? For the very same reason he/she answers any being that ever lived on earth. All of humanity is equal. If God answered people thousands of years ago, why on earth would he/she stop now? Its time you equalized yourself with the rest of the human race, and stopped putting others above you. Yes, we can all learn from others, and we can all receive the information directly to learn from God right in the privacy of our own home. You are as much an equal part of God as Jesus was. Furthermore, Jesus came to bring humanity this same message, So after over 2,000 years, the majority of humanity is still operating with mostly five senses. I think its time the entire human race used all six it would spare people a lot of misery when they can receive direct answers to anything that is on their, your mind. It makes life much easier to live when you have a steady light to guide you, no matter what you are facing. Copyright by Barbara Rose, Ph.D. All Rights Reserved. Hair Coloring

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Sara Goldstein Hair coloring dates back at least to the ancient Romans, and many societies have used herbal solutions to dye their hair. Modern hair coloring began in 1909 when a French chemist came up with the first commercial hair color. What is color? Color is a complex subject, but put simply, its the way light reflects from pigments. Change either the pigment or the kind of light, and you change the color we see. There are two main kinds of color: red-yellow (warm shades) and red-blue (cool shades). How do I know what sort of coloring I have? 1. If you have: A skin tone of ivory, peach, creamy beige, light or dark golden brown, or coppery colored, and Your eyes are blue, blue-green, hazel, light green, amber or coffee colored then you have warm coloring and should choose a warm shade for your hair (gold with red highlights, gold or honey brown, copper or mahogany). 2. If you have: A skin tone of rosy pink or beige, dark olive, dark brown or ebony and Your eyes are light or dark blue, deep green, brown or black then you have cool coloring and should choose a cool shade for your hair (burgundy highlights, ash or platinum blonde, brown, dark brown, black, gray, or white). What is hair? Hair consists of a shaft, which we see, and its root, which is below the skin in a follicle (little pit). The shaft is dead. The living part is the follicle and the few cells just emerging from it at the base of the shaft. This is how the hair grows, by cells at its base subdividing, pushing upwards, hardening and developing pigment. Typically, each of our hairs grows at about inch per month and lives anywhere from 3 to 5 years. Hair is made of keratin, the same protein thats in our fingernails and skin, plus some other proteins, and a pigment called melanin. There are two kinds of melanin: eumelanin (shades from brown to black) and phaeomelanin (yellowish-blond, ginger and red colors). What are the ingredients of permanent hair color? There are two main ones, ammonia and hydrogen peroxide. Ammonia opens the cuticle of the hair shaft so the color molecules can enter. Hydrogen peroxide bleaches the hair so that new color can be added to create the desired shade. Some permanent colors come with more natural ingredients than others, but will likely still have some synthetic chemicals as well. How is hair color changed? The hair shaft is like a tube. The outside is the cuticle and inside is the cortex with the pigment. Any applied coloring goes through the cuticle to the cortex, but it may or may not interact with your natural pigment. If you have dark hair and want it lighter, there are 2 steps: (1) your color is bleached and (2) the new color is added If you have light-colored hair and want it darker, only step (2) is needed. Hair coloring is thought of in 3 levels, based on how long the coloring lasts. Level 1, semi-permanent hair color - The color molecules are very tiny. They go through the hairs cuticle into the cortex where your natural color is, but they dont interact with your natural pigment. Because theyre so tiny, they leave the hair more easily and so this coloring level isnt permanent. It lasts through about 6 to 12 shampoos. It also doesnt lighten your hair because theres no peroxide or ammonia present. Nor does it cover gray more than about 50%. Level 2, demi-permanent hair color - The color molecules are again very small and they go through into the cortex. Here, they combine with each other to form bigger molecules. Therefore they dont wash out as quickly, lasting through a couple dozen shampoos. This type of coloring includes some peroxide, which enables it to subtly lighten the natural shade and blend better with existing gray. Level 3, permanent hair color - Again, tiny molecules enter the cortex but this time they react to the natural molecules and expand to a size too large to be washed out. Ammonia and peroxide are both used, so the hair is first lightened, and then colored to the desired shade. Since the final shade is a combination of your natural color and the added color, it will be unique to you. Hair coloring has become so popular because its so easy to customize, said Jacquelyn, the office manager at Salon Cabochon in Sacramento, CA. And so many more men have discovered the fun of changing your hair color once in a while. I mean, why just pay attention to the cut and style? Why not be creative with the color too? Metabolic Syndrome

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Nahar Efendy Noordin The metabolism is the rate at which the body can burn calories when resting. This is also called the basal metabolic rate and the body can burn 60 to 75 percent of its energy when resting. When we begin to move the metabolism increases, and people that have more muscle than fat will burn more calories as it takes more energy to maintain this muscle. Those people will just want more and more exercise to keep their metabolism running and will try to convince those fatter friends to go for a jog. Some people however, have low metabolisms and a jog will seem like pure torture. They would rather sit and watch TV or sleep. These people are normally overweight or obese. The slow metabolism will actually cause the body to store more fat, and will add to the high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other symptoms that are experienced by obese people. This is also called the metabolic syndrome, Syndrome X, or the insulin resistance syndrome. It has been noted that one in five people will suffer from this metabolic syndrome, and this can lead to severe health risks like cardiovascular disorder, kidney disease and thicker arteries. One will simply lead to another. People also make the mistake of dieting incorrectly which will make your metabolism even slower: Not eating will cause your body to store more fats in case you do not eat.Lowering your calorie intake.Too much sugar. Not doing any activity, just sitting.Thyroid problems. If you have a poor metabolism and are overweight, you will be at risk of developing diabetes which is caused by insulin resistance. Insulin is a natural hormone that assists in the transfer of sugar into energy in the cells. If you are obese your body will resist the insulin and the hormone will just keep begin released leading to an excess which is diabetes. You can have hypertension and dislipidemia which means that the good cholesterol in the body is slower than the bad cholesterol. Heart disease and kidney diseases will increase. Here are some things that will improve the functioning of your metabolism: Do not diet by cutting calories and starving yourself. Insist on a healthy, normal eating plan that will change your lifestyle and make it easier to maintain. Still have the foods that you want, but in moderation. Start slowly and work your way towards better habits. Swap high sugar products for ones with no sugar or gluten, and do not skip meals.Exercise Just start slowly and you could include stretching exercise when you get out of bed in the morning. This will get your blood flowing and improve your metabolism. Drink lots of water and breathe correctly, and you will see improvements in no time. Making Sauces At Home Is Easier Than You Think

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Bill Long Most of us don’t make sauces at home because we’re…well, we’re intimidated. It seems so complicated and time consuming to mix all that stuff and season it and boil it and get it just right. And we don’t know how. We go to a fancy restaurant, and the sauces are so delicate and beautiful, and they are in French, and we know we could never make something like that. Oh, yes, it’s fear and our lack of knowledge that keeps us from enjoying sauces on our home-cooked food. It really isn’t as difficult as you think to make sauces, though. Once you know about the different kinds of sauces and master a few basic techniques, you can easily make sauces at home. You can even begin to invent your own sauces, based on your personal preferences and the things your family likes best. Sauces make your food look, taste and smell better. They make food more appetizing. The difference between a Ham & Egg McMuffin and Eggs Benedict is the hollandaise sauce. And it is a big difference, isn’t it? In the same way, sauces can turn your plain and simple cooking into something special. Sauces add flavor to bland foods, like rice and pasta. Think Alfredo Sauce, Marinara Sauce, Soy Sauce. Sauces also make dry foods moister and easier to eat. Before refrigeration, sauces were used to mask the flavor of tainted food. Although it’s not recommended that you serve tainted food, a good sauce can still mask the flavor of undesirable food. Kids are more likely to eat broccoli with cheese sauce than without, right? For those of us who are somewhat…indifferent cooks, a good sauce can sometimes mask a cooking mistake, too. Like, perhaps, rice that is just a tiny bit scorched. Served by candlelight and with a nice hollandaise sauce, no one will ever know. Categories of Sauces There are all kinds of sauces. Ketchup is a sauce. Salsa is a sauce. Vinaigrette dressing is a sauce. For our cooking purposes, though, there are four main categories of sauces. Sauces made from stock. Stock is the liquid that remains after you cook things in water. The water retains the flavor of whatever was cooked in it, and is used to flavor other dishes. Stock can be thickened or reduced, or various ingredients can be added to it to make brown sauces, white sauces and pan sauces. Sauces from roux. Roux is a mixture of flour and fat that is combined over low heat. Gravy is made from roux. Sauces from emulsions. Emulsions are mixtures of liquids that don’t mix. Mayonnaise is an example of an emulsion. Combinations: Combination sauces are often made from roux and stock, as well as other ingredients. Mother Sauces In the 19th century, Chef Marie-Antoine Careme developed a system for cooking that relied on “mother sauces” or “grand sauces”. Careme is considered the father of classic French cooking. His system was also used by Auguste Escoffier, another famous French chef. The five mother sauces provide the basis for other sauces that are used in classic French cooking. Espagole is a reduced brown sauce made from cooking meat. Veloute is white stock thickened with roux. Bechamel is milk thickened with roux. Hollaindaise or Mayonnaise is an emulsion made with butter or oil, egg yolks and lemon juice. Tomato Sauce is tomato sauce. This all sounds very complex, but it is not. Once you know how to make a nice roux, and how to make stock, you can make hundreds of different sauces. Once you can make the five mother sauces, your sauce repertoire is practically unlimited. Here are some examples: Cheese sauce is bchamel sauce with grated cheese added. Gravy is a roux made from pan drippings and espagole or milk. Cream sauce for vegetables is veloute with a few herbs tossed in. But you don’t have to tell your family and guests that it’s cheese sauce or whatever. Instead, you can serve them “steamed broccoli with a light cheese bchamel” or “steamed vegetables in veloute sauce.” And the list can go on and on. Using sauces to make your home cooked meals look better and taste better does not have to be intimidating. You just need to know a few basic techniques, and you will soon be a master sauce-maker. Defend Against Digestive Parasites with Coconut Oil

Monday, January 21st, 2008

By John Goh Parasites infect the intestines of both humans and animals and can cause a great deal of intestinal distress. Even when the parasites are diagnosed and treated, they can damage the intestinal lining, causing chronic health problems that persist for years. We often associate parasites with Third World countries and poor sanitation, but parasites are a problem everywhere, even in modern countries. In countries where sanitation is provided, people mistakenly assume that they are safe from parasites. But parasites are everywhere, always waiting for the opportunity to latch onto an unsuspecting host. There are two general groups of parasites. One consists of worms such as tape worms and roundworms. The second category is the protozoa, one-celled organisms. Protozoa like giardia and cryptosporidium normally live in the digestive tracts of many mammals. Public water supplies can become infected with these organisms when they are contaminated by sewage or animal waste. Although you may not hear about it, outbreaks occur all the time, usually in smaller cities and occasionally in large metropolitan areas. In 1998, the three million residents of Sydney, Australia were advised by the Health Department to boil all their tap water because high concentrations of giardia and cryptosporidium were detected in the city’s water supply. In this instance most people were spared from infection because they were warned in time. Coconut oil may provide an effective defense against many troublesome parasites including giardia. Like bacteria and fungi, giardia can’t stand up against the medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) found in coconut oil. By taking coconut oil, coconut meat or coconut milk in your diet every day, you will have an ample supply of MCFAs. The MCFAs kill giardia before they establish a foothold in your body. Research has confirmed the effectiveness of MCFA in destroying giardia and possibly other protozoa. Besides defending against protozoa, coconut oil has also been used for the removal of intestinal worms. It is used to get rid of tapeworms in India. The Indians also rub coconut oil onto the scalp to remove head lice. Parasites like tapeworms, lice and giardia can be eliminated, or at least held in check by coconut oil. It is one natural remedy you can use to defend against digestive parasites.
