How Start Breaking Free From a Narcissist

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Stephanie Manley Are you with a narcissist? Does your life feel complicated beyond belief? Is all of your anxiety typically centered around one person? Do you find that person gives you standards that you cant keep up with, because their standards change all of the time? You may be with a narcissist. Life is a narcissist is a living hell. One thing is critical though, you must divorce yourself from getting self validation from this person. Secretly this person fears you. They will go out of their way to tear you down. They will tear you down on all fronts, the will not stop. They are compelled to do this. Their actions, while they may feel personal, are not personal. Realize the narcissist is unable to make those deeper personal connections that normal people make. They are unable to make friendships, and love relationships the rest of the population makes. Instead, they offer interactions that may look like friendships and love relationships, but they are not the same. The narcissist must interact with people to feed their narcissism, but you are only a source to them. What can you do? You need to learn to step away from the relationship. You must begin to break those ties that bind you together. Breaking this type of relationship can be very difficult, it may feel impossible. To save yourself you must learn to distance yourself from this person. This can be something as simple as realizing their put downs, their rages, and their fits are not personal. When the person acts up, you need to learn how to deflect their actions. Whether this means walking away, not responding, or another action, it is important that you do not feed into their misbehavior. It is critical that you realize that in dealing with a narcissist, they are not normal people. It is unlikely that they can ever be reformed into normal people. You will have set your own boundaries and protective walls around yourself from that person. Once you start this, you will have more power in your situation with your narcissist. Ideally, one day you should walk away from the relationship, and no longer have any contact with this person. Breaking free of your narcissist can be done. Delavay’s Blueberry (Vaccinium delavayi)

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Geoff Bryant Whether we know it or not, most of us are familiar with the genus Vaccinium as it has among its members several current or potential commercial crops, such as blueberry, cranberry, bilberry and huckleberry. Vaccinium delavayi, however, is strictly ornamental and very unlikely to be our next export success. The name vaccinium is an ancient one taken directly from the Latin vernacular: it was used to refer to Vaccinium myrtillus, the delightfully named whortleberry. Vaccinium delavayi takes its specific name, like so many Chinese plants, from the French Jesuit missionary Abb Jean Marie Delavay (1838-95), who discovered the plant and introduced it to cultivation. He was also responsible for such well-known plants as Abies delavayi, Magnolia delavayi and Osmanthus delavayi reaching our gardens. Vaccinium delavayi, a native of Burma and south-west China, is a hardy evergreen shrub with small, rounded leaves that are tough and leathery. In spring it produces clusters of small, bell-shaped to almost globular, white flowers that open from pink buds. The flowers are very much in the style of Pieris, Gaultheria, Andromeda and several other closely related genera in the erica family. Pretty as the flowers are, the real appeal of this little blueberry lies in the deep bluish-black berries that follow. They are just like small blueberries and have a similar flavour but are rather acidic unless very ripe. Although it seems a shame to pick the berries, you might as well because the birds will have no such reservations. While scarcely a spectacular plant, Vaccinium delavayi is attractive throughout the year and is always interesting, whether in flower, fruit or just as a neat foliage plant. It is an ideal specimen for a rockery or partially shaded corner. It grows to about 45cm high 60cm wide and can be kept trimmed to a small mound. However, any pruning will adversely affect either the flowering or fruiting. As any blueberry grower will tell you, Vaccinium plants prefer acidic soil conditions. The small ornamental species are most at home when grown with other erica family plants such as dwarf rhododendrons, evergreen azaleas, ericas, callunas and pieris. The native New Zealand Gaultheria species are interesting plants to combine with Vaccinium delavayi. Gaultheria crassa, in particular, looks very like its Chinese relative and provides a good illustration of how plants that evolve under similar conditions often resemble each other despite occurring thousands of kilometres apart. Other small native berrying plants, especially those of the epacris family, also make good companions. An alpine rockery with good berrying forms of Pentachondra pumila, Leucopogon fraseri, Cyathodes empetrifolia, Gaultheria crassa and Vaccinium delavayi would be full of interest and colour throughout the year. You won’t find Vaccinium delavayi in every garden centre, but it shouldn’t require too much of a search to locate a specimen. Try looking in the perennials as well as among the shrubs, as it’s often sold at a very small size and tends to get lumped in with the rockery perennials. Yet More Hair Care Myths - The Truth And The Lies

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Michael Barrows Those hair care myths just keep coming! In this third of 3 articles, we examine some of the most widely known myths - and dig out the truth 1. Hair should be washed every day FALSE: There is no correct schedule for washing hair. Every person should shampoo according to the specific needs of their hair type and texture. While some people do benefit from a daily shampoo, others benefit from a variety of shampooing schedules. 2. More lather = a more effective shampoo = cleaner hair FALSE: Lathering agents are often added to shampoos, but more foam doesn’t mean cleaner hair. 3. Hair develops immunity to the same shampoo over time FALSE: There is no scientific evidence to prove this myth. 4. Brushing your hair is better than combing it FALSE: Actually, your hair reacts better to a comb than a brush. Brushing it will only lead to split ends and hair breakage. 5. Split ends can be repaired without trimming FALSE: The only successful treatment for removing split ends is with a scissors. Some hair care products may temporarily merge split ends together, but this only lasts until your next shampoo. Always remember that damaged ends tend to grow slower than healthy, well-maintained, trimmed hair. 6. Coloring hair during pregnancy is harmful FALSE (PROBABLY): Some physicians disagree, but most believe that coloring the hair during pregnancy is not dangerous to the baby. When in doubt always get your physicians permission to color your hair during pregnancy. Most experts believe that the key danger with hair coloring is not the application of the product to the scalp but the inhalation of the strong chemical odor. 7. Virgin root hair should be treated differently TRUE: The hair that is closest to the roots reacts differently to the application of new hair color and chemical treatments. Hair color applied directly to the roots will process differently that color applied on hair that has already been treated. 8. Lemon juice will bleach hair blonde FALSE: Some naturally light haired people may notice a slight lightening or brightening after prolonged sun exposure soaked in lemon juice, but most people wont not see any obvious change in their hair lightness or brightness. 9. A sunburnt scalp can lead to hair loss TRUE: Severe sunburn or a series of burns that occur over time may damage delicate hair follicles at the root level. People with a genetic predisposition towards hair loss may accelerate the onset of hair loss activity. Avoid scalp burns by applying sun protection products to your scalp along with your hair. 10. For thick, shiny hair, eat a diet that’s rich in iron and protein FALSE: Iron deficiency can cause hair loss, but dermatologists say the reverse is not true: eating extra iron will not give you thick hair. In fact, overloading on iron can cause serious health problems (the correct amount for optimal health is about 15 milligrams a day for a woman). The same thing is true with protein. Dermatologists say protein-deficiency will cause lackluster skin and brittle hair. It’s important to get enough protein, but eating more than normal won’t make hair any shinier. 11. Wearing hats causes hair loss FALSE: In order for the hair to fall out, the hat would have to be so tight that it cuts circulation to the follicles. Milliners can breathe a collective sigh of relief! 12. Hormones are not related to hair loss TRUE: Although hormonal imbalance can cause temporary hair loss, as is common with women after pregnancy, the important thing to remember is that the hair will grow back. 13. Swimming pool chemicals can turn hair green TRUE: Frequent swimmers with natural blonde or chemically highlighted hair that is extremely porous may experience the development of green tints and shades over time. This problem can be prevented with regular use of moisturizing shampoo and conditioners that provides a natural barrier to chlorine and related chemicals. 14. Hair grows faster on different parts of the head TRUE: There is some scientific evidence that the growth rate of hair may vary on different parts of the head for select people. There is also some indication that the growth rate of hair on babies may be faster on the crown than on any other parts of the scalp. Usually the growth rate differences are very marginal and will not impact the hair appearance in any way. SUMMARY Heard another myth about hair? Do your research ask an expert! This doesnt include your grandmother, best friend or local barmaid. Instead, talk to an experienced hairdresser or a trichologist. Always get the real facts before you act on any hair myths you owe it to your hair. Michael Barrows (With thanks to Daniel Mcullough and Karen M. The “Busy Mom” - Is it Your Choice?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Lori Radun Let’s face it. We live in a fast paced world. As moms, it is hard to keep up with everything on our plates. We have piles of laundry, piles of dishes, and piles of school papers. Along with the many errands we have to run, we also play chauffer for our children. It may be martial arts on Monday, soccer practice on Tuesday and music lessons on Wednesday. Weekends may be even worse with baseball games, gymnastics meets or ballet lessons. And it doesn’t end there. Many of us also try to squeeze in time to volunteer at school and church because we know they need help. When life is too busy, stress increases and adrenaline levels rise. Eventually, our bodies begin to tell us we are in trouble. Common problems of an over-stressed lifestyle include physical illness, disease, anxiety and depression. Our bodies can handle only so much before they scream STOP! Relationships may also suffer, as everyone becomes tired and irritable. Children, who are over extended, may not be able to communicate their stress in words, but tantrums, fighting and other unacceptable behavior may all be warning signs. People who try to handle too much often become disorganized and forgetful. (Have you ever searched everywhere for something you just saw yesterday? Or remembered an appointment - three days late?) My husband and I are perfect examples. I was scheduled to attend a teleclass on Monday: on Wednesday it dawned on me that I had forgotten all about it. Last week my husband returned home twice after leaving for work. The first day he forgot his briefcase; the next day, he forgot his samples. Today he forgot his suit jacket. It really is a vicious circle. Every time we have to take time to return home or worry about things we have forgotten, stress levels increase even more. For many of us, volunteering becomes a time-stealing trap. Don’t hear me wrong. Volunteering is a great thing. Our world needs volunteers, and volunteering is very rewarding. It is also our responsibility to teach our children the importance of community service. But moms overwhelmed with volunteer work may be over scheduling themselves at the expense of their families and themselves. When people identify a kindhearted person, who likes to help, they may take advantage. It is easier to approach that type of person than one who is never willing to volunteer. Volunteering is important, but keeping our lives balanced is more important. Expect others to do their share, but when they do not, do not step in for them. Knowing when to say no is as important as knowing when to say yes. How wonderful it would be to have a magical machine with the ability to create peace in the midst of chaos. With this machine life would be slower and we would feel like we have all the time in the world. If I had this machine I know what my life might look like: I wake up 15 minutes early every day to meditate and pray. I have time to spend on laundry and housecleaning because there is nothing on my schedule. My children have time to relax and play because they have eliminated many of their extracurricular activities. Each night my family sits down to dinner together and shares the best parts of their day. One night of the week is designated as family game night. Saturday night is date night and the children enjoy their babysitter. Everyone in the family is happier and less stressed. Real connections with loved ones exist. Is this a “Fantasy Island” that can never be reached? No it is not. In fact, no magical machine is needed. We all have the power to create any kind of life we want. We can transform our stressful lives into more relaxed and enjoyable ones. We may have to rearrange our priorities. We may have to make some hard choices - eliminating some of the activities and responsibilities we once believed were necessary. We may have to develop new habits or change old attitudes. But it can be done. Change is not always easy, but isn’t a happier, less stressful life worth it? Think about this: The lives we model today will probably be the types of lives our children live as adults. We do have a choice - choose wisely. Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Sebastian Foss If you are undergoing some legal problems, go for the best services like law office of Virginia. That is a given. But the problem with professional legal services such as one offered by the law office of Virginia is that they may be expensive. So how do you, a person who can barely afford an attorney, scale through the hurdles? Find Below some useful Information. Find out What Your legal fees are. You have to understand how your law office of Virginia is billing you. Always ask potential lawyers at a firm youre considering for a full explanation of their fees and billing practices. Informations are very important get facts. Besides, asking any lawyer to discuss their fees with you is one other way of finding out how they treat clients. At a law office of Virginia, there are four standard fee arrangements. the attorney might charge per hour or a one time payment fees retainers, or contingent fees, depending on their policies. The most common fee arrangement that the law office of Virginia would use is the hourly rate arrangement. Here, you pay your attorney an hourly rate which has been agreed upon by him and you for the total number of lawyer hours. But the hourly rate may vary depending upon the law office of Virginias experience. So the more experienced your attorney is, the more likelihood that his fees are going to be high. Hourly rates also depend upon operating expenses and the location of his or her practice (that is, how far it is from sources of information, courts, etc.). For the ultimate Tips Phone Bills. This if the first on the line as the tendency with most clients is that each time they have a question to ask their law office of Virginia, they call. Asking questions is not a problem. But remember, that for every minute that passes consulting with your attorney on the phone, that could be extra charges for you. First of all check their frequently asked question if they have a website before making a list of questions you might want to ask. this is to help reduce the law office of Virginia charges. Discovery. This is the exchange of information with the other side. this is a time for negotiation, although technically, discovery is not synonymous to that word. This part of the legal process is always expensive. Try do do some things yourself, such as collecting and collating various documents like canceled checks, tax returns, various types of written communication, utility bills, and charge card statements. Focus - The Missing Marketing Ingredient

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Jennifer McLean I think one of the biggest challenges facing companies at just about any timeframe of its corporate life is focus. The focus I am referring to relates to a number of areas within the company. First is the notion of culture. Does your company have more of a sales-driven culture, (which represents a majority of companies)? Or is your company an engineering driven culture? Or is it a marketing-driven culture? In my experience, a small percentage of companies are based on a marketing-driven culture, more than half are sales-driven, and for technology, they are generally engineering-driven. Not being a marketing-driven company is big challenge to maintaining consistent focus. What I mean by marketing-driven is looking from the ground up at everything you are doing as a marketing opportunity. So, for example, looking at your sales strategy. Is your sales guy running the show? This is very common. The sales guys come in and they want the sale, no matter the cost. And that cost is what I call a “seat-of-the- pants” approach where there is a frenetic environment and the sales guy turns on a dime depending on his customer. And features and benefits of the products are sometimes even adjusted for that one customer. That is a lack of focus. What most companies are not doing is starting from scratch, looking at the market opportunity, looking at the market need, looking at what pain their product is going to solve in the marketplace. (Thats actually a key issue: “product myopia” - benefits versus features this will be covered in a future post). In an engineering-driven culture, its kind of a “if you build it, they will come” type of approach. They focus on “that little knob over there can create this really cool GUI which really is, like, cool”. Versus creating a product that is actually going to meet the needs of the customer. Sometimes in an engineering-driven environment, the product marketing person will meet with customers and will clearly see the opportunities for product improvement that the engineers will resist to their death. What is needed is a different way of thinking; my credibility branding model helps because it offers a system to walk through the business and marketing strategy process. But in general empowering your marketing executives and departments and using your marketing brand when making business decisions is really important. For example if resources are limited and you have the choice of pursuing several different customers but cant service them all, dont just go for the money, go for the one that will meet budget expectations but also add credibility to the company and product. For example a well known brand will add far more credibility and make the sale process easier than a bigger sale to a no names company. The sale to the no named company will go easier when the brand name is on board. This is a process of focus. The discussion of focus also goes to the opportunities that come from success. Sometimes there are things that are in the marketplace that you don’t realize are opportunities until you introduce the product. One example is Avons skin lotion that was created for dry skin. Users discovered that it actually stops mosquitoes from biting, which is now how it is used. This is a rare case of a new product focus that worked (and Avon was quick enough to capitalize on it). Most of those opportunities however, are not real, they just look like they could be real. So many companies fall into the trap of going out and losing the initial focus of the current market. Its that idea of customer acquisition. Every one knows that its a lot cheaper to pursue your current customers and increase their spending, but they sometimes forget that its also a lot less expensive to go after new customers in the same marketplace rather than pursuing all sorts of new market opportunities. With current target audiences you have good evidence of success; you also have proof of concept that the products benefit users. You have customers that validate how they use your product. While, some of these new market opportunities are definitely important, the majority are not. I have seen too many companies fail by going after these new, sexier, market opportunities that just take their focus away from their core competency. Core competency is an important concept as well. Do you know what you core competency is? If you dont there is a pretty good chance that customers, industry influencers and shareholders also dont know. This is not a chastisement. It is easy to lose perspective on what this is. As a company and its products move through the market sales cycle the definition of the core competency inherently changes. And if you are doing your job well as a marketer then you are influencing a change in the marketplace of what your product category is and how the new category benefits users. The messaging around the core competency will need to be adjusted over time but the essential elements will remain the same. Here a couple of questions that can help you understand what your core competency is: — In 10 words or less what does your company do? — Who do your products serve and how do these products serve them? — Describe your customers, who are they, what is their job description, how has your product impacted them (how have they benefited)? Once answered you will likely have a better idea of what your core competency is. Now with these answers in hand, review your marketing materials and programs. You may see opportunities for improvements. Healthy Eating and Weight Loss

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Mary Wynn Lewis As long as there have been people, there has been weight loss. It is just in the past few decades that we have linked healthy eating habits with weight loss. Today you will see ads promising that a pill will aid you in weight loss, fad diets and eating certain foods. It seems we all want a quick fix for weight loss and we want to continue our bad eating habits instead of trying healthy eating. This obesity problem has now begun affecting children as well as their parents and many health concerns have arisen because of this growing problem. The key to proper weight loss is healthy eating. In the past, we did not know as much about nutrition and how the body works as we do today, so it is no wonder people in the past died early because of weight loss problems and other health issues. A farmer of the past thought nothing of eating eggs, bacon, toast with butter, everyday for breakfast. He wasnt aware of the health risks involved in eating these foods on a regular basis. In the past, to promote weight loss, you were cautioned against eating too many calories. Healthy eating was not a priority until recently.
